Seedling waterhemp at the 2 to10 leaf stage in 6 leaf corn. Control must be prioritized since herbicide effectiveness will be reduced as this weed gets bigger.

Crop Report: The good, the bad and the difficult

OMAFRA Field Crop Report for the week of June 20

Crop growth and conditions continue to be variable across the province. While crops look good in areas that were able to be planted either early or as per normal and into decent soil conditions, other areas have been delayed significantly by continued rainfall. Understandably, this has been a difficult time for those growers. There is […] Read more

Waterhemp has been confirmed as resistant to multiple modes of action across as many as 18 counties in Ontario.

Waterhemp is the new “oh-no” weed

Ontario biotypes are resistant to up to five different herbicide groups

It’s no longer a matter of ‘if’ waterhemp comes to your farm, it’s ‘when.’ Those were the words of Richard Anderson, a business representative with BASF, speaking last month at the Southwest Agricultural Conference at University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus. It was probably the most pertinent take-home message from a panel discussion on tackling waterhemp, […] Read more

Glyphosate-resistant kochia.

The silver bullet that wasn’t

Science Notes: Glyphosate’s declining weed control over 25 years

It has been a quarter century since corn and soybeans were engineered to withstand the withering mists of the herbicide glyphosate. Initially heralded as a “silver bullet” for weed control, the modified crops and their herbicide companion were quickly and widely adopted across corn and soybean-growing regions of North America. In the years that followed, […] Read more

VIDEO: Liquid helps electric weed killing machine

Crop.zone has partnered with John Deere on a new, wider machine for in-crop weed control

A German company tested its electric desiccation system on Canadian farms this year as it works to bring weed control using electricity to large-scale farms. Crop.zone is unique in that it combines an application of liquid to the plant at the front of the tractor and an electric shock at the back, which helps with […] Read more

Agritechnica update: Give a big shock to weeds

Farmers are being pushed to find an alternative to desiccants to burn down crops, as companies are increasingly leery of herbicides approved close to harvest. People have been shocking weeds with electricity for 100 years, but the return on the electricity invested and the technology required to do so safely haven’t always worked. Crop.zone is […] Read more

Counting the stems and tillers is important and will provide a better assessment of accuracy in seeding.

Take time to assess winter wheat stands

Scouting can indicate how the crop is progressing and management steps going forward

Mid- to late-fall on the farm is often fraught with too many jobs, but taking time to assess winter wheat stands can augment the bottom line by diagnosing issues that may have occurred at planting. According to Joanna Follings, cereals specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, anyone can learn to […] Read more

The headlands of this field received a fall application to control dandelions, making for a nice seed bed to plant into. The rest of the field had no fall management, and the dandelion pressure is significant and will take much longer to control now.

Three tips for weed management this fall

OMAFRA Field Crop Report for the week ending September 18

Reflecting on some of the weed control issues that came up this past spring, below are three key items where management activities this fall can significantly improve control and/or financial return next season. 1. Fall management provides better dandelion control. In the fall, resource allocation of perennial weeds shifts and carbohydrates move towards the root […] Read more

Palmer amaranth pops back up in Ontario

Weed infamous in U.S. for multiple herbicide resistances

A single plant that showed up this summer on the edge of a southwestern Ontario cornfield is cause for concern among Canadian farmers, weed specialists warn. Writing Monday in the ag ministry’s Field Crop News, Ontario provincial weed management specialist Mike Cowbrough said the plant in question, found in Wellington County, is confirmed as palmer […] Read more
