An abattoir serving northern Huron and southern Bruce counties has been destroyed by fire, leaving area farmers with fewer meat processing options.

Green’s Meat Market and Abattoir, in Wingham, had about 70 carcasses hanging for processing at the time of the fire, according to Midwestern Newspapers.

A passerby noticed flames coming from the building at about 10 p.m.

Green’s Meat Market says on its Facebook page that fire departments from Wingham, Blyth and Teeswater responded.

“Given the extent of the damage, it leaves the building in a condition where we are unable to continue immediate operation. In the coming days, we will be in contact with our farmers to determine next steps,” the company said on its Facebook page.

There is a lack of meat processing capacity for farmers, especially those who sell locally and are seeing demand grow during the COVID-19 pandemic. The loss of another local abattoir further reduces that capacity.
