Smaller tractors make big waves for machinery companies

Two new versions of AGCO’s Massey Ferguson tiny tractors offer premium options seen on bigger machines

The Massey Ferguson 1800M and 2800M series of compact tractors have new turbocharged, Iseki diesel engines and now look like the rest of the Massey Ferguson tractor lineup.

Glacier FarmMedia – Farm machinery companies have been weathering a slower period of sales in the past couple seasons, but small tractors have been a big hit with buyers.

Meeting those demands has seen AGCO announce a premium range of Massey Ferguson compact tractors, the 1800M and 2800M, that replaced the 1700 and the 2700 series.

“Anything that is a 1800 in our series is now a three cylinder, and anything that is a 2800 is now a four cylinder,” said Garrett Davis, tactical marketing manager for compact and utility equipment at AGCO.

Agco settles legal dispute with TAFE

Agco and Tractors and Farm Equipment (TAFE) from India announced July 1 that they had settled their legal dispute, which began in 2024 over local ownership of the Massey Ferguson brand name and other concerns.

“Now these are an Iseki built tractor from tip to tail.”

The previous compact tractors had Shibaura engines.

The 1800M series tractors have a 1.83-litre three-cylinder Iseki diesel engine and are available in two models with 36 or 39 engine horsepower.

The 2800M series has a 2.43-litre, four-cylinder Iseki-powered engine that powers three models with 49, 55 and 60 hp.

Iseki engines meet Tier IV emissions standards, are turbocharged and glow plugs are standard equipment.

The M series of compact tractors are offered in both factory-installed cab and open-station models.

Massey’s E (economy) series of compact tractors are not offered with a cab.

“There are also the 18, 25, 35, and 40 Economy series. Those will have a manual shuttle shift or a hydrostatic transmission. We also have a 2850 and a 2860 Economy. None of these are available with a cab or with a mid-mount (power take-off), which in Canada you usually want something with a mid-mount pto for snow removal,” Davis said.

The 2,000 r.p.m. mid-mount pto has an electro-hydraulic engagement knob, and a push-button switch mounted on the rear fender lets an operator engage or disengage the rear 540 pto from ground level.

The M series comes with either a 12×12 power shuttle-shift transmission or the optional three-range hydrostatic transmission.

The power shift comes with a forward/reverse shuttle shift where no clutching is required to change direction, which is especially useful when doing loader work.

The hydrostatic transmission has dual foot-pedal controls to change direction of travel.

The new M series also comes with a new look.

“Now the outside of the tractor matches all of our higher horsepower tractors. We’ve got some congruence from the garden compact all the way to our 8700 series as far as hood styling, headlights and the Massey emblem,” Davis said.

The M Series compact tractors have 12.6 gallon per minute hydraulic output, an optional thumb-controlled throttle.

The 1835M, 1840M and 2850M models offer a Cat. I rear three-point hitch, while the 2855M and 2860M models are equipped with Cat. I and II three-point hitch with 3,086-pound lift capacity.

There is a third function kit for grapples on the front loader, and a deluxe cab is optional that has air-ride seat, LED work lights, and a Bluetooth-ready radio with CD player.
