Jason Emke named Emerging Young Leader by Ontario Sheep Farmers

Emke recognized for his volunteerism and sector support

Jason Emke, Ontario Sheep Farmers' Emerging Leader winner, challenged others in the room to volunteer within their districts and the industry during the Ontario Sheep Farmers' annual gala dinner in Cambridge, Ont., Oct. 25, 2024.

Jason Emke of Oak Generation Farm was named Emerging Leader at the Ontario Sheep Farmers’ annual gala in Cambridge Oct. 25.

Why it matters: The Emerging Leader award recognizes OSF members who demonstrate innovation, leadership and significant contributions to Ontario’s sheep industry.

“It takes a family, which everybody in this room is to me, to keep the whole thing moving forward,” said Emke, when accepting the award. “I really appreciate the support (in) the successes we’ve had, the obstacles we’ve had to overcome, not only as our district but as Ontario Sheep.”

The fourth-generation sheep farmer and district two chair was lauded for his commitment to youth leadership, volunteerism and dedication to elevating the sector. He also supports all levels of district, provincial and national sheep organizations and shows as an exhibitor or judge.

“Jason is always striving for continuing education and self-improvement, whether it be learning from the past to implement proven methods of flock management or implementing the latest in technology and innovation,” said Jay Lennox, district two director. “He remains open-minded.”

Lennox said Emke’s contribution at the district level to bring innovative ideas and speakers, and as a valued Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week Sheep Day committee member and emcee, showcases his knowledge, organizational and communication skills and dedication to the sheep industry.

The young farmer challenged those at the gala to volunteer for the betterment of the industry.

“We gotta get down in the trenches,” he said. “I just keep encouraging people to move forward, get involved in your districts and be a part of what your industry has to prove.”
