The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the Canadian Sheep Federation’s eligibility as a Responsible Administrator for national sheep traceability.
“This moment is the result of decades of vision and persistence,” said federation chair Fred Baker in a statement. “We are excited to work with the government and industry to implement a traceability system that protects the national flock and supports the long-term viability of our producers.”
Until the CFIA and CSF sign a formal agreement, which could take several months, the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency will continue to serve as the sheep Responsible Administrator, a position it has maintained since 2004.
The beef sector incorporated the CCIA in 1998, and by 2001, were named the administrator for the Livestock Identification and Traceability Program (TRACE) under the Health of Animals Regulations.
Since then, the swine sector has been administered by the Canadian Pork Council since 2015 and the dairy cattle sector has been administered by Lactanet Canada since 2020.
