Research from University of Guelph recognized at global dairy science conference

Faculty receive awards for long-term impact, students for new research

Dairy at Guelph had a strong showing at the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) annual meeting with students and faculty winning numerous awards.

The University of Guelph dairy research organization was represented by over 30 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty, who presented a total of 72 oral research talks and posters. This was one of the largest contingents and contributions at the conference.

Several of members were recognized for their achievements and graduate students earned numerous awards. Dr. Trevor DeVries, professor in Animal Biosciences, received the DeLaval Dairy Extension Award. Dr. Stephen LeBlanc, professor in Population Medicine and director of Dairy at Guelph, was honoured with the Zinpro Award for Excellence in Dairy Science.

Dr. Michael Steele, professor in Animal Biosciences and Dr. David Renaud, associate professor in Population Medicine, were inducted into the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) 100 Club, which recognizes individuals who have published over 100 papers in the journal.

They join an impressive list of JDS 100 Club members from Dairy at Guelph, including Drs. DeVries, Miglior, Duffield, LeBlanc, Kelton and Leslie. There are more JDS Club 100 members from the University of Guelph than any other university.

Dairy at Guelph was also heavily represented in the graduate student contests. In the PhD Division of the Dairy Production Poster competition, Amanda Fischer Tlustos took first place and Gabriella Roby Dodd placed second. In the MSc Division, Melinda Kovacs placed first. In the PhD Division of the Dairy Production Paper Presentation, Jessica Brasier was awarded third place and in the MSc Division, Avalon Phillips placed third.

The conference was held June 23 through 25 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Dairy at Guelph is the umbrella organization bringing together dairy research across the University of Guelph.
