Farmers want data strategy

Canadian Federation of Agriculture presses governments for national plan amid major transition

Data-driven technologies will help farmers meet sustainability and productivity goals, but governance and management of data are major hurdles. That's why farm organizations told agriculture ministers last month they want a national data strategy.

Drones have been shown at Canada's Outdoor Farm Show, with more interest as more uses are found.

Spray drones just waiting to go

Interest in drones to deliver fertilizer, seed and sprays continues to grow, but regulatory hurdles remain

There have been few technologies in waiting with as much pent-up interest as agricultural drones. The unmanned flying machines started out as data gatherers, scouting crops and sensing from above, a tool of agronomists, farmers and researchers and they remain in regular use. ““We’ve discovered that butterflies and moths accumulate so much static electricity when flying that pollen is literally pulled through the air towards them as they approach a flower.”

Static electricity attracts pollen to insects

Science Notes: Butterflies, moths pull pollen to them without touching plants

Butterflies and moths collect so much static electricity while in flight that pollen grains from flowers can be pulled across air gaps of several millimetres or centimetres. The finding, published recently in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, suggests this likely increases their efficiency and effectiveness as pollinators. The study opens the door to […] Read more

Identifying the farmer factor with YEN network

Lessons from four years of farmer-generated data show that growers who closely monitor crops through each growth stage get better results

With another winter wheat season complete, participants in the Great Lakes Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) continue learning how the farmer factor — what a grower does, and when — can make or break top yields.

Cranberry beans sowing new ground in Grey County

Fifteen-inch cranberry beans are unheard of in southwestern Ontario, but things are done differently in Grey County. Wayne Metzger, co-owner of Highland Custom Farming (HCF), fielded questions on the Etna variety cranberry bean he planted on May 27 during the Grey County Soil and Crop Improvement Association’s July 16 crop walk and elevator tour. Why […] Read more
