Sulphur (S) deficiency in winter wheat. S and Mn deficiency are appearing in fields: S deficiency appears as yellowing on the whole leaf starting with new growth. Mn deficiency will show a distinct striping pattern with necrotic areas, on new growth.

Most Canadian grain stocks tighter than a year ago

For many of Canada’s major crops, their holdings came in lower than a year ago, as Statistics Canada released its stocks of principal field crops as of March 31 report. There were declines in all wheat, durum, oats, corn, lentils and peas, but there were increases for barley and canola while soybeans were relatively steady.

Feed Grain Weekly: ‘A good time to secure pricing’

There has been some movement in feed grain prices across the Canadian Prairies during the week ended Apr. 3, particularly in Alberta. Susanne Leclerc of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton chalked that up to factors such as road bans and the approach of spring seeding. She also noted a change in corn.  

One Grain Farmers of Ontario delegate said he’s keen on keeping cereal grains within Ontario farmers’ rotations, especially in areas with marginal land.

Alberta barley breeding centre relaunched

"Western Crop Innovations will carry on the Field Crop Development Centre’s substantial legacy, ensuring its work is addressing the issues farmers are facing in the fields," said RJ Sigurdson, Alberta's minister of agriculture and irrigation in a news release Wednesday.
