Tom Pick, co-founder of seed company Pickseed, passed away April 26 at the age of 86.
Born in Czechoslovakia, Pick moved to Canada as a newborn and was later educated at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph. He would eventually grow the seed business established by his parents, Otto and Marie, into the fourth largest grass and forage seed company in the world.

Pick was consistently involved with the global seed industry, having served as president of the Canadian Seed Trade Association and sat on boards of the American Seed Trade Association and the Federation Internationale de Semences.
Throughout the decades, Pickseed continued to grow, expanding into the U.S. market in the 1970s and taking over the seed division of Maple Leaf Mills in 1981.
In 2013, Pick helped spearhead the sale of Pickseed to Danish turf and seed firm DLF. It dropped the Pickseed name in 2022, but remains headquartered in Lindsay, Ont.
Pick’s celebration of life was held April 28 in Lindsay.
