Rob O’Connor, show director of Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show

As show director of Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, Rob O’Connor looks forward to stewarding this 32-year-old farm show each year. We caught up with Rob to find out more about Ontario’s largest outdoor farm show and the ways the show connects farmers with the latest advancements in Canadian agriculture.

Why is Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show an important stop for farmers each September?

In three days, with over 36,000 people coming through the gates, not many events connect farm families and farm businesses the way this one does. The show is both an efficient way to see a lot of farm-related products and services, and a day off the farm and farmers come to the show to share their passion with those who have similar interests in agriculture.

Which are the popular displays you see farmers gathering at most?

A couple of things stand out at the show for offering something unique to farmers: the crop plots and the in-field equipment demonstrations. Seeing something working or growing in the environment it was intended for is so informative for farmers. We know that decisions are made in the field, and that’s why this show gives farmers specialized information they won’t get anywhere else.

Are there a lot of offerings at the show for livestock producers?

Livestock Central is the area where livestock exhibitors have booths, plus there are live demonstrations of technology such as virtual fencing, handling equipment and grazing demonstrations, just to name a few. All of these highlight specialized products just for livestock producers.

Will dairy producers have a specific area for the show?

Ontario and Quebec dairy producers will enjoy the Dairy Innovation Centre where exhibitors showcase the latest in dairy technology, such as automated calf feeders and products that focus on cow comfort. The ever-popular Thursday Dairy Brunch is back for producers to catch up with friends and colleagues in person.

Where will I find new innovations at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show?

Our Innovations Program features companies and startups with unique new ideas that will help farmers with productivity, sustainability and farm management. Innovations Program winners will be identified at the show, so farmers can check out advancements available now, or in the near future. The Dairy Innovation Centre also features the evolution of equipment and products in the dairy industry.

With a show that’s over 100 acres of exhibit space, how can visitors find what they need?

Our mobile app gives farmers a great way to find their way around, and it can be downloaded before the show. It shows themed areas, the location of demos, a searchable map, the exhibitor list, plus food vendors and special events. It’s a big help for visitors finding what they want to see at the show.

What are you looking forward to most at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show this year?

For me, it’s about the people. Their excitement at the show is always contagious. People are here to make in-person connections with exhibitors, innovators, and all the people who care deeply for the industry. Our staff and volunteers work on this show all year to make sure this event is a great experience for every visitor. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back!
