Winning an award for environmental sustainability has to make for a nice feel-good moment when showcasing new technologies, and this was exactly what Clēan Works was awarded at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show this past summer.

The Ontario-based company has designed the Clēan Flow System, a process that kills more than 99 per cent of pathogens on foods such as fruits and vegetables using a mixture of ultraviolet light, hydrogen and oxygen. In a press release, the company says its technology treats a wide variety of produce, such as berries, leafy greens – even frozen produce – without causing damage or degradation.

Women who fed a nation

More than 40,000 young women supported the war effort between the 1940s and early 1950s, helping grow and harvest crops amid labour shortages. They were called Farmerettes.

Not only does this make produce safer to eat, it’s waterless technology is sustainable (hence the award) and increases the shelf life of foods treated with its system.

In this video, hear from Vanessa Camacho, R&D coordinator, who talks about how the system was developed and how Clēan Flow also assisted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
