The fifth annual Calves for a Cause event is one of the most popular attractions of the Canadian Dairy XPO.
The event will be held April 2 at 7 p.m. at CDX 2025 in Stratford in the WeCover Cow Coliseum and honours Brooks Markus, who was born with a rare nervous system disorder called Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS). The Ingersoll-area child receives medical support at the Children’s Health Foundation of London, who is the financial benefactor of the event.
“For the dairy industry we believe this event is important because it allows the industry to give back to an important cause. We work hard to make sure we give credit to the industry for a success we have, so that the public knows that this is the whole industry giving back to a very important cause,” said event founder Darryl Markus and Brooks’ father.

Calves for a Cause allows dairy breeders to donate up to 100 percent of proceeds from the sale to the Foundation. To date, more than $170,000 has been raised for the foundation.
How it works
The live sale of embryos and semen will be auctioned off online from April 2, while the online sale of frozen genetics, run by Farm Gate Timed Auctions, will occur April 1 through 3.
Shipping can be arranged across Canada and the U.S. Anyone wishing to watch or bid on the livestream can do so at dlms.ca.
“This sale raises money to help make families lives a little better while their children are in-patient at London Children’s Hospital. Like many families, we couldn’t have imagined that one of our children would need to use the services of a children’s hospital, but like many families we now do. No one ever knows when or if they will need to use Children’s Hospital, but we want to support programs within the hospital that directly affect positive outcomes for all,”
