Chicago cattle futures fell on Monday after the USDA reported a human case of New World screwworm in the U.S.
The case, investigated by the Maryland Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was confirmed by the CDC as New World screwworm on August 4, and involved a patient who returned from travel to El Salvador, HHS spokesman Andrew G. Nixon told Reuters.
No animal cases have been confirmed in the U.S. this year. The U.S. closed its border to Mexican cattle imports in July due to a case of New World Screwworm.

Chicago soybeans fell on Monday after hitting two-month highs on Friday, as industry players lost confidence that Chinese buyers would purchase U.S. soybeans, while dealers assessed exemptions granted to U.S. crude oil refiners for use of soy-based biofuels.
Most-active October live cattle contracts closed at 236.825 cents a pound, down 1.050 cents. December live cattle settled at 238.050 cents per pound, a loss of 1.100 cents.
Most-traded October feeder cattle futures closed at 360.750 cents a pound, down 1.750 cents. September feeders settled at 361.900 cents a pound, down 0.775 cents.
The USDA reported choice boxed beef at $408.49 per cwt Tuesday afternoon, up $0.58. Select boxed beef settled at $385.38 per cwt, up $1.72.
Most-active October lean hog futures settled at 91.400 cents a pound, up 0.200 cents. December lean hogs closed at 84.750 cents per pound, up 0.375 cents.
Pork carcass cutout value was reported at $114.17 per cwt on Tuesday afternoon, up $1.28.
