Viterra has announced plans to expand the rail car loading capability at two of its Prairie elevators to 112 cars each.
Canada’s largest grain handling company on Wednesday announced it will put a total of $3.7 million into the two capital projects, both of which are sited on Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) track.
The company’s elevator at Grenfell, Sask., about 100 km south of Yorkton, will have its rail car spot raised to 112 from 56. The elevator was expanded last summer to include an extra 13,000 tonnes of storage capacity, for a total of 28,200 tonnes.

The rail spot at the company’s Grassy Lake, Alta. elevator, between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, will be expanded to 112 cars from 61.
“Maximizing the use of 100-car trains reduces cycle times and frees up more railcar capacity for the system as a whole,” said Bob Miller, Viterra’s senior vice-president for grain, in a release Wednesday.
The two projects will give Viterra a total of 35 facilities with capability to load at least 100 cars, the company said. Both projects are expected to start shortly and be completed in time for this year’s harvest.
