Agrium’s crop input arm UAP will be the Prairie distributor for a U.S. chemical company’s corn herbicide next year.
UAP (United Agri Products) said Monday it has an “exclusive distribution agreement” with Amvac Chemical’s international sales and marketing arm, Amvac Netherlands, for Impact herbicide in Western Canada for the 2014 growing season.
Impact’s active ingredient, topramezone, is registered for use in the West in field corn crops, including conventional and herbicide tolerant hybrids, as well as sweet corn and seed corn hybrids and inbred lines, UAP says.

The brand is no stranger to the Canadian market. BASF launched Impact in Eastern Canada in 2007 under license from California-based Amvac, and since last year has marketed topramezone in the East under the name Armezon. Engage Agro last year handled the Impact brand’s sales to corn growers in Canada.
UAP describes Impact as offering “outstanding” post-emergent control of broadleaf weeds and “remarkable” grass control.
Topramezone belongs to Group 27, the HPPD inhibitors, which affect plants’ membrane structure and carotenoid pigment formation by inhibiting the HPPD enzyme, which in turn damages chlorophyll in treated plants exposed to sunlight.
The chemical is absorbed by leaves, roots and shoots and translocated to the growing points of sensitive weeds to provide post-emergence weed control, UAP said in its release.
In glyphosate-tolerant fields, UAP noted, Impact is often tank-mixed with glyphosate and atrazine for burndown and “overall improved weed control over glyphosate alone.” — AGCanada.com Network
