U.S. livestock: Substantial prices gains for live, feeder cattle

Cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange made substantial gains on Wednesday, aided by a weaker United States dollar.

The August live cattle contract gained US$2.600 per hundredweight and ended the day at US$212.350. The August feeder cattle contract rose by a similar amount, gaining US$2.650/cwt. to close at US$303.875.

The United States Department of Agriculture reported mixed movement in choice and select boxes. Choice boxes were down US$0.28/cwt at US$365.16 and select boxes were up US$0.20/cwt at US$356.72.

July lean hogs gained US$0.45 to close Wednesday at US$105.025/cwt., but failed to surpass the four-month high set on Tuesday at US$106.050.
