An import from North Dakota State University is scheduled to become the sixth dean of the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Douglas Freeman’s five-year term in Saskatoon is to begin March 1, 2010. He replaces Dr. Charles Rhodes, who has worked at WCVM for 39 years and has been its dean since 2002.
“Dr. Freeman’s broad experience, his approachable personality and his collaborative manner will make an excellent fit with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Saskatchewan,” Brett Fairbairn, the U of S’s provost and vice-president, said in a release Wednesday.

Freeman since 2001 has been a professor at NDSU in Fargo, where he has served as head of two departments: veterinary diagnostic services and veterinary and microbiological sciences.
Freeman’s resume includes a D.V.M. and an M.Sc. in theriogenology (veterinary reproductive medicine) from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from the University of Idaho.
Freeman is also a past-president of the American College of Theriogenologists and currently sits on the board of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, of which the WCVM is a member.
While at NDSU, Freeman also served as director of the Great Plains Institute of Food Safety for two years, and has led “multi-disciplinary research programs in disease surveillance, public health and food safety,” the U of S said.
