Saskatchewan’s agriculture ministry has released application forms for its short-term loan programs for hog and cattle producers.

The provincial short-term cattle loan program forms will be available at rural municipality offices and regional Saskatchewan Agriculture offices, the province said Monday. The deadline for completed applications for the cattle program is March 31.

The maximum principal available for a cattle producer is $75 per head for calves, feeders and bred heifers on the farm. The cattle must have been owned or leased by the applicant as of Aug. 1, 2007.

Meanwhile, the provincial short-term hog loan program forms are being mailed directly to all hog farmers registered with the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board. The deadline for completed applications for the hog program is June 10.

The hog loans take the form of advances on verified sales of mature hogs or weanling hogs between Oct. 1, 2007 and May 2, 2008.

Advances for mature hogs will be based on 90 per cent of the sum of $140 minus the weekly average price per 100 kg for Index 108 slaughter hogs, while advances on weanling sales will be for $10 per weanling delivered in any week when the Saskatchewan market price is below $140 per 100 kg.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said in a press release that the programs, which were first announced Dec. 21, are estimated to provide $90 million in support to “help producers through this current price downturn.”
