Below-average yields and average quality are the estimated results of Saskatchewan’s 2007 harvest campaign, which now sits at 94 per cent complete, the provincial ag department reported Wednesday.
Harvest progress continues ahead of the curve, overall, compared to the five-year (2002-06) average of 82 per cent, the province reported. Southern regions sit at 99 per cent complete, while the northeast remains farthest behind at 80 per cent.
“Yield estimates continue to point to below-average total production,” the department wrote in its weekly crop report. “Overall, quality could be considered average.”
Farmers in some regions expect to be wrapped up this week, while others predict they may need until the end of the month, the province reported.
Frost, rain and migratory birds were reported to have caused the bulk of the damage among crops still out in the field. Those who have finished harvest are busy with baling, rock picking, fall fertilizing and harrowing, the report noted.
