Waterloo Regional Police are asking rural residents around Elmira to report property damage to them after chasing down an allegedly stolen tractor.
The police service said it took a call about a reported stolen tractor at about 8:30 p.m. Friday in Woolwich Township in Elmira, north of Waterloo, and “attempted to stop the operator of the tractor, but the driver refused.”
What police called a “suspect apprehension pursuit” ran through parts of Woolwich, coming to an end near Hawkesville, about 11 km southwest.
A 34-year-old man from the Walkerton area was arrested and held for show cause, facing charges of theft, possession of stolen property, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.

The newspaper Ontario Farmer reported on its website Monday that the police chase of the tractor lasted about two hours, as the New Holland tractor tore across fields and cut around police vehicles that got in front of the tractor to try and stop it.
The ag newspaper said some locals criticized police for not shooting out the tractor’s tires to halt the chase and prevent further damage.
