A second shipping tower for lakers and a third receiving pit for grain trucks are on the to-build list at grain handler Richardson International’s Lake Ontario terminal in Hamilton.
The Winnipeg company said Wednesday it has budgeted $5.5 million in total for expansions at the Hamilton port terminal to meet what it described as “growing demand” for Ontario crops.
Projects included in that budget include a third receiving pit and elevation leg with two new truck beam scales, which are expected to boost the terminal’s capacity to receive grain from trucks by a third.

The pit/leg and scales are expected to be completed in time for the fall corn and bean harvest, the company said in its release Wednesday.
The second vessel-shipping tower, which is expected to improve the terminal’s shipping capacity, is scheduled to be completed in 2012, the company said.
A 2,000-square foot addition to office space at the terminal is also included in the budget, the company said, noting more announcements about added storage capacity and “other enhancements” at the Hamilton site can be expected “in the near future.”
“Hamilton has emerged as a major grain hub in Ontario and demand continues to grow,” Darwin Sobkow, the company’s vice-president for agribusiness operations, said in the release.
The company describes the Hamilton site, which it opened in 1998, as a “favoured link” to ship Ontario wheat, corn and soybeans to Atlantic Canada and markets in the U.S.
“Richardson was the first to invest in a grain vessel loading facility in the port of Hamilton over a decade ago and we are well positioned to capture increasing demand,” Sobkow said Wednesday.
