Quebec’s ag ministry will put up $1 million for the development of a new showcase centre for ornamental horticulture near l’Institut de technologie agroalimentaire, the ag college at St-Hyacinthe.

La Maison de l’horticulture ornementale, as the new facility will be called, will involve renovation and restructuring of existing space for a 2011 opening, the province said Wednesday.

Agriculture Minister Claude Bechard said in a release that the new centre will be a place for the province’s ornamental growers’ federation (FIHOQ, la Federation interdisciplinaire de l’horticulture ornementale du Quebec) and its member associations and their partners to exchange ideas and develop the industry.

Over 5,000 farms, businesses and processors are involved in Quebec’s ornamental horticulture sector, which generates revenues of over $1.5 billion in the province, the ag ministry said.
