The canola harvest across regions of Western
Canada continues to be highly variable, according to the Canola
Council of Canada’s final crop briefing for the season.

The council’s report for the period ended September 6 said the
combining of canola was complete in central and eastern Manitoba
while areas of west-central Alberta and the Peace River region of
northern Alberta were only about 20 per cent swathed.

Showers and cooler weather have slowed maturity of the
canola crops in some regions and subsequently the harvest, the
council said.

Of the canola harvested across Western Canada, there have
been reports of smaller-than-normal seed size.

Frost was evident in parts of northwestern Saskatchewan, the
council said. Although the frost damage was light in many areas, some
low lying areas likely experienced more damage.

Reports of late-season diseases also continue, including
high levels of sclerotinia in untreated fields in parts of
Manitoba, northern Saskatchewan, central Alberta and the Peace
district, as well as aster yellows, alternaria in northwestern Saskatchewan
and north-central Alberta, and fusarium wilt and blackleg in
south-central Manitoba.
