John Griffin, president of the W.P. Griffin farm on Prince Edward Island, has been named to the National Farm Products Council (NFPC) for a four-year term.
Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced Griffin’s appointment Friday, saying his “knowledge and experience as an innovative leader in Canadian agribusiness will prove invaluable as the council continues its important work.”
The eight-member council supervises the operations of the four national marketing agencies that manage the supply of Canadian chicken, turkey, eggs, and broiler-hatching eggs. It also supervises the operation of the Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency.

Griffin has been president of the family-owned farm company at Elmsdale, about 70 km northwest of Summerside, since 2000. The company grows potatoes, grain and hay, runs a potato packaging facility and operates a beef cattle feedlot.
The Business Development Bank of Canada named W.P. Griffin Inc. as the first recipient of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) Business Ownership Transition Award, in recognition of its successful transition from one generation to another.
Griffin is also on the board of the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture, where he chairs its on-farm food safety committee. He’s also vice-chair of the Canadian On-Farm Food Safety Working Group in Ottawa. Griffin was also previously president (2001-04) and a director (1998-2000) of the P.E.I. Grain Elevators Corp.
