The Ontario government plans to use $2.5 million of its $150 million aid package for its livestock and horticulture sectors to fund ag research.

The $2.5 million, part of the aid package announced in December, will go to the Agricultural Adaptation Council, a coalition of 71 farm, food and rural groups, to put toward research to “secure greater payoffs for producers down the road,” Agriculture Minister Leona Dombrowsky said Tuesday in a release.

To get funding, eligible projects must:

  • be market-oriented, be ready for practical application and have support from the agri-food industry;
  • have benefits that go directly to the ag sector;
  • nclude pilot activities, research and analysis designed to reduce cost, enhance sector diversity, increase yields , improve product quality or develop new products and markets; and
  • address gaps in support of ag and food research and technology transfers.

Dombrowsky announced the funding Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association.
