Manitoba plans to amend its Real Property Act to make it easier for landlords of wind farm operators to sell or mortgage the wind farm’s host land.

Currently, anyone doing a title search on land that hosts wind turbines must review not only the owner’s interest, but all the registered interests affecting the wind farm, including the wind farm developer.

The amendments introduced today would allow registrations dealing with a wind farm to be registered against a new wind farm title, rather than the title of the underlying property owner.

The new easement category will “significantly decrease” the time and costs around title searches, Energy Minister Jim Rondeau said in a release.

The legislative changes had been previously introduced but died when the legislature shut down before the provincial election earlier this summer.
