Manitoba’s farmers, particularly in its east and Interlake region, are expected to file crop insurance claims for excess moisture on about 420,000 unseeded acres, for a total expected payout of $21.5 million.
That total makes for Manitoba farmers’ third-wettest year in the last 10, the province said Thursday.
Manitoba farmers’ wettest recent year was in 2005, when claims were made on about 1.41 million unseeded acres, worth a total of $58.3 million in insurance payments.
The 2009 growing season comes in just behind the 2004 growing season, in which claims were filed on 622,450 unseeded acres, worth a total of $24.7 million in claims.

Starting with the 2000 crop year, the province noted, producers enrolled in AgriInsurance got excess moisture insurance with no premium cost for basic $50 per acre coverage.
“We are working with producers to help them deal with the significant challenges caused by this year’s weather conditions,” Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk said in a release Thursday.
“We are committed to assist our farm families when they need it the most and will work to make insurance payments available as soon as possible,” said Wowchuk, who has farmed in the province’s northwest.
