James Richardson International plans to boost the capacity of its crop terminal at Hamilton, Ont. by over half.

The Winnipeg company, which last month announced eight storage and rail car capacity expansion projects at seven of its Pioneer Grain elevators in the three Prairie provinces, said Thursday it will add 15,000 tonnes of storage capacity at the Hamilton port terminal.

The project, already underway for completion in July, will boost the terminal’s capacity by 55 per cent to 43,500 tonnes.

The terminal, completed in 1998, is the company’s newest. According to JRI, the facility’s handle consists mainly of Ontario wheat, corn and soybeans, and its location gives it access to markets in both Atlantic Canada and the U.S. It also accepts area farmers’ deliveries directly.

JRI president Curt Vossen said in a release that the Hamilton site is “vital” to JRI’s Eastern Canada operations.
