BASF Canada’s strobilurin fungicide Headline has picked up approval for control of crown rust in oats crops in Canada.
Headline, which carries the active ingredient pyraclostrobin, is best applied immediately after flag leaf emergence in cereals at a recommended rate of 120 to 160 mL per acre, the company said in a release.
Crown rust shows up as a reddish, pustule-like, spore-producing formation called uredinia on both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf. The disease develops best during mild to warm days (20°-25°C) and mild nights (15°-20°C), the company said, adding that moderate to severe breakouts in a field could cut grain yield by 10 to 40 per cent.
BASF Canada’s fungicide and seed treatment market manager Mark Shillingford noted an application has been made for similar approval in the U.S., and a decision is expected there sometime in 2008.
