An eastern Ontario grain handling and ag supply firm has announced plans to spend $10 million building what it says will be the region’s biggest feed mill operation.

MacEwen Grain last week said it will build its new mill next to its grain elevator and rail siding at Maxville, about 70 km east of Ottawa.

The company said its new feed plant would cut the company’s costs, boost product quality and “capture significant synergies” through integration with the Maxville grain elevator complex.

MacEwen Grain and its sister firm, MacEwen Agricentre, serve eastern Ontario and western Quebec, also operating a feed mill at nearby St. Isidore and custom fertilizer blending plants at Maxville and nearby Vars.

Mexico reports 53 per cent increase in flesh-eating screwworm cases since July

Mexico has recorded 5,086 cases of flesh-eating screwworm in animals as of August 17, a 53 per cent jump from the number of cases reported in July, according to Mexican government data seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

“No commercial feed mill of this magnitude has ever been constructed in Eastern Ontario,” company president Jim MacEwen said in a release.

The company said its new Maxville mill will be “among the most modern and technologically advanced in Canada,” with HACCP certification and “computerized precision handling of ingredients throughout the entire process.”

The mill “will provide livestock producers of the region with feed rations that match their farms’ needs more precisely than was ever possible before,” the company said.
