The Canadian Grain Commission’s Harvest Sample program will run for an extra four weeks due to this year’s late harvest.
The CGC on Wednesday announced it would extend the program deadline to Dec. 1, 2009.
“While this year’s Harvest Sample program is well underway, we have received fewer samples this year as compared to numbers in previous years,” CGC chief commissioner Elwin Hermanson said in a release. “The extra four weeks gives producers time to send their samples and get a free grade.”
Under the program, representative crop samples submitted by farmers are used to determine the quality of harvest as it goes to market, and provides buyers worldwide with information on the quality of Canadian grain, the CGC said.

Producers who submit samples to the Harvest Sample program receive, for free, an unofficial Canadian Grain Commission grade; protein content measurements for their cereal grains and pulses; oil, protein and chlorophyll content in sampled canola; and oil and protein content and iodine value in flaxseed
Producers who’ve submitted their samples can get their results using their Harvest Sample identification number. Western producers can obtain their results online or by calling 1-888-324-2248 toll-free; Eastern producers can obtain results by sending an e-mail or by calling 1-800-853-6705, also toll-free.
