(Revised) — The Canola Council of Canada and industry partners have set up a new fund to back research of canola oil’s use in healthy diets, the commodity group announced Tuesday.
The Canola Product Research Fund is backed by the Canola Council, the three Prairie canola growers’ associations, Bayer CropScience, Dow AgroSciences, Monsanto and Pioneer Hi-Bred, which between them will provide funding of between $350,000 and $400,000 per year for three years to fund three major clinical-trial projects, the group said.
“We look on the Canola Product Research Fund as essential seed money to build the science behind what we already know about the healthy properties of canola oil,” said council president JoAnne Buth in a release. “Over the next few months, we would hope to see even more financial support from both inside and outside the canola industry.”

Two studies will begin this fall, the group said: one, at the University of Manitoba, on the efficacy of canola oil in the management of high cholesterol and other heart disease risk factors and two, at the University of British Columbia, on the impact of canola oil on insulin resistance in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes.
A third study for the University of Toronto will examine the effect of canola oil on blood sugar control and heart disease risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes.
