Alberta crops improve with rain

MarketsFarm – Drought conditions that devastated crops in Alberta last year and were poised to do the same this year are becoming something in the past, according to the province’s latest crop report.

Recent rainfall has been wiping out any notion of drought in 2022 as soil moisture conditions continued to improve across the province. As of June 21, moisture levels reached 77 per cent good excellent, six points above the five-year average. Even the once parched south achieved a rating of 62 per cent good to excellent, although 29 per cent of the region was fair.

Alberta Crop Report: Higher-than-average yields expected

Cooler temperatures and rainfall in Alberta supported projected higher-than-normal crop yields, according to the province’s crop report released on Aug. 1, 2025.

Subsoil moisture levels throughout Alberta have greatly improved as well this year at 63 per cent good to excellent.

In turn, these rating have bolstered the crop ratings, placing the province at 78 per good to excellent, up three points from last week’s report. Spring wheat was estimated to be 84 per cent good to excellent, with barley at 78 and oats at 86. Canola stood at 73 per cent good to excellent and dry peas were at 78.

Of the five regions in Alberta, the south remained the least rated, with 62 per cent of its major crops good to excellent. The remainder of the province was above 80, with the central region tops at 88 per cent good to excellent.

The pasture ratings to pegged at 50 per cent good to excellent, with the tame hay at 59 per cent.
