Every year, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers awards a prize to 50 of the most notable engineering advancements in farm machinery.

The list of technologies picking up one of ASABE’s AE50 awards is usually pretty impressive, and the 2026 list, announced earlier this month, is no exception.

WHY IT MATTERS: Awards such as these give us all a clearer picture of the pace and focus of upcoming innovations in farm equipment.

Here’s a look at some of the notable winners.

Agco picked up seven awards. Notably, the company’s 1000 Series Gen4 and 800 Series Gen5 tractors were each recognized.

Fendt’s 832 Vario also won a Farm Machine 2026 Award for Mid-Range Tractor and Audience Choice Award at Agritechnica in Germany in November for what was described as “its full redesign that includes VarioDrive, Fendt iD low-speed concept, self-cleaning engine air filter and an innovative lighting concept.”

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-90469 size-full" src="https://static.farmtario.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/30113025/249949_web1_Fendt.jpg" alt="Agco’s Fendt brand won two AE50 awards for its tractors, one for the 1000 Vario Gen 4 and another for the 800 Vario Gen 5.
Fendt’s smaller 516 Vario also won tractor of the year for mid-power category at Agritechnica.

Among Agco’s other products that took home AE50 awards this year were its PTx Trimble OutRun autonomous tillage system, which is not yet commercially available but likely will be within a couple of years.

As well, the company recently introduced the Hesston by Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB double-chamber, small square baler.

Using the same basic concept as the MF SB.1436DB, Great Plains Manufacturing, which is now owned by Kubota, won an award for its SSB high capacity dual-chamber, small square baler.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-90468 size-full" src="https://static.farmtario.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/30113023/249949_web1_Claas-harvester.jpg" alt="Claas’ new Jaguar 1000 Series forage harvesters, which were just introduced this past fall won an AE50.
CNH’s Case IH brand won four awards, including for its SenseApply, which uses real-time sensing for variable rate control of liquid and granular applications.

John Deere collected five awards, including for its application systems, the See and Spray Select and Select Variable Rate systems. Also picking up a prize was Deere’s Autonomy system, which is available now for select 8R tractors. Other tractor models are currently available with autonomy-ready systems built into them for future applications.

Claas’s newest Jaguar 1000 Series forage harvester picked up an award. That machine was just introduced to the Canadian market last fall.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-90470 size-full" src="https://static.farmtario.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/30113027/249949_web1_MacDon-header.jpg" alt="MacDon’s new FD2 Plus FlexDraper header also took home an AE50 award for its design.
A few awards were also picked up by Canadian manufacturers.

MacDon won one for its new FD2 Plus FlexDraper header, and Salford won its prize for the AB230CD chassis mounted air boom spreader.

As well, Saskatchewan-based Bourgault won for its Intelligent Control-BIC system.

The Salford Group won two AE50 awards for a new precision cultivator and a high capacity boom fertilizer applicator.

The AE50 awards are from the American Society of Agricultural and Biochemical Engineers (ASABE).

The awards recognize 50 innovations in agriculture, food and biological systems and will be presented Feb. 11 just before the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville.

Salford’s AB640 Air Boom Applicator was one of the winners. The AB640 has a 90-foot boom and 640-cubic-foot hopper which allows producers to cover more ground in less time, reducing soil compaction while maintaining accurate fertilizer application rates. said “By combining high capacity, advanced metering technology, and industry-leading application widths, the AB640 helps producers achieve their crop fertility goals with fewer passes and less fuel,” says Gavin Held, product manager for Application Equipment at Salford.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="675" src="https://static.farmtario.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/22164616/2024-05-30-AB640_MY24-2-scaled-1-1024x675.jpeg" alt="Salford's high capacity AB640 has a 90-foot boom and 640-cubic-foot hopper.
The Row Crop Precision Cultivator is the second award winner for the Salford, Ont.-based company.

The cultivator advances the precision of mechanical, guided weed control. It has high-speed capability, is controlled by precision-guided row alignment and includes hydraulic down pressure zones with section control. That means more effective weed removal and minimal crop damage.

“The Row Crop Precision Cultivator empowers producers to adopt sustainable practices while achieving exceptional results,” says Josh Kettle, product manager for Ground Engaging Equipment. “Its camera and wand precision guidance systems and adjustable configurations make it an invaluable tool for organic and conventional operations needing improved mechanical weed control.”

The Row Crop Precision Cultivator was developed with the support of the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network Ltd. (CAAIN).
