Farmers will come together in-person for a unique small-scale agronomy experience Sept. 23 and 24 at Discovery Farm Woodstock.

Crop Stop, presented by Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show (COFS) in partnership with Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA), will bring farmers, agriculture businesses and industry partners together to network, share information and tour crop plots in a fun, relaxed, safe environment.

Crop Stop will feature the growing crop plots that are a favourite destination of farmers during a usual Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show year. Eleven companies will showcase their seed, fertilizer and crop protection options in plots that have been carefully tended this year. Nowhere else is such a close comparison available to help guide on-farm decision making.

“Industry groups, suppliers and farmers are a community of people living in the same neighbourhoods and sharing the same livelihood. In many cases they have been apart for the past 18 months, and it is exciting for them to be coming together again,” says COFS President Doug Wagner.

At Crop Stop, farmers can move freely through the event, connecting with industry partners who will highlight new technology and demonstrate new equipment through larger outdoor booth spaces.

“Farmers have chosen an outdoor lifestyle. They do research online, but before making important purchases, they want to see the equipment operating in-person. Crop Stop will create that opportunity,” Wagner says.

Featured programming will run throughout both days, and farmers will be able to tour crop plots in small groups in a rotating fashion. Eleven input companies have plots established on-site, and industry experts will be on hand to lead the tours and talk about the latest crop technology.

Trade show exhibitors will showcase the latest in crop technology and equipment.

To protect the health of guests, exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, suppliers and local communities, COVID-19 protocols and extra sanitation measures will be followed for this event in accordance with the Ontario health orders of the day. This includes guidelines regarding number of guests, masking and vaccination requirements.

Crop Stop runs September 23 and 24, 2021 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance in order to follow COVID-19 tracing requirements. Visitors can choose which day works best for them. To order tickets visit: https://crop-stop.eventbrite.com/.

Within 24 hours of the event visitors will be required to complete a COVID-19 screening form and bring that form, along with their ticket to the event. Forms will be available on site for those who forget and have already purchased a ticket. Tickets are NOT available at the gate.

Crop Stop will feature the latest in technology, with special programming featuring equipment, software and research.

Presented by Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show (COFS) in partnership with Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA), Crop Stop promises a high-value experience through interaction between farmers and industry partners.

The event will include crop plot tours, equipment demos and new technology. Exhibitors will bring crop production advances to this two-day show Sept. 23 and 24 at Discovery Farm Woodstock, home of COFS. Here is a preview of what farmers can expect:

Resilient Fields App

Looking for ways to build resilience in your fields? Try the Resilient Fields App. It’s a handy online tool farmers can use to support better management decision-making on a field-by-field basis. The app is free, and allows farmers to access information on a variety of field challenges, such as erosion, nutrient needs, water issues and soil management. Based on field data, a confidential report is created that can be filed for future use and shared as necessary with a certified crop advisor. Presented by Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario. Go to resilientfields.ca to try out the Resilient Fields App. Learn more at christianfarmers.org.

Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show returns for its 25th year, as the gathering place for the industry and a centre of innovation information.

There’s more focus this year on sharing knowledge with the new Farmers Edge Knowledge Tent, presented by Glacier FarmMedia.

Farmers can visit the tent to learn about agronomy, precision agriculture, farm succession, farmer health issues and markets.

“Most of the things that we demonstrate at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show are best seen live in a field. But there is more to running a farm than can be seen in the field alone,” said Amanda Macfarlane, communications manager at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show.

“Agriculture is based in science and business, and offering farmers a new education-based program will help to give them as much of an edge in the office as the field demonstrations do when they’re comparing field equipment.”

The Knowledge Tent gives farmers the chance to learn from speakers from across the country.

Farmers Edge will be providing several sessions on topics that range from increasing productivity using existing resources, scouting using satellite imagery, grids versus zones for soil sampling, building a digital strategy and how to choose a precision agriculture partner.

Bruce Burnett, Glacier FarmMedia’s director of weather and markets, will be speaking on how to manage your marketing decisions in the era of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose unpredictable trade policies can move markets with a Tweet.

Kathlyn Hossack, from Fit to Farm, will be speaking on shifting health on the farm away from a culture of toughness to one of care.

Well-known succession planning coach Elaine Froese will also be in the tent, but only once, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

“This year’s introductory program will give farmers new ideas to use digital agronomy, insight into volatile trade markets, considering their own health and dealing with difficult family issues like
succession planning,” said Macfarlane.

OMAFRA is taking soil health action to the field this year at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show (COFS).

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is hosting a live strip tillage demonstration every day at 11:15 a.m. in the Southwest Demo Field at the show.

This is in addition to the regular equipment demonstrations that take place each afternoon at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show.

“This is in the spirit of soil health and the idea that many people want to improve their soil health as they’ve seen it deteriorate over the years,” said Ian McDonald, OMAFRA’s crop innovation specialist. “ With strip till, you gain the advantages of both conventional and no till and offset the negatives of both of those.

“We look at it as a win-win,” he said.

OMAFRA works with the Ontario Soil Conservation Improvement Association (OSCIA) each year on static demonstrations at the OSCIA display. This year, McDonald said they wanted farmers to be able to see strip till in action and be able to look at the tillage strips and be able to talk to industry representatives and OMAFRA staff right away.

The strip till units will each run 200 to 300 feet and then farmers will be able to check out the tillage depth and the soil immediately.

There’s quite a bit of variation in strip tillage machinery and how farmers use it. Each brand has different features on their machines and the demonstration will give famers the opportunity to see which piece of equipment will work best for their soil and crop conditions. Some pieces of equipment are set up for either fall tillage or spring tillage, while some are set up for both. Different types of equipment work better in certain soil conditions, and some are best suited to incorporate fertilizers.

That versatility in the practice and the ability to manage fertility during strip till passages, along with the soil health benefits, are increasing the popularity of the practice.

OMAFRA is also participating in the Farmers Edge Knowledge Tent, with speakers at 1 p.m. each day. Farmers and OMAFRA representatives will be there talking about their experience with strip tillage.

Livestock have always had a significant place at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show and that continues in 2018 at FCC Livestock Central.

More than 100 exhibitors at the show are livestock specific, focusing on dairy, beef, sheep, goats, swine, poultry and more.

The difference at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show is that exhibitors can showcase their products live and in use by livestock. That gives farmers the chance to see how the equipment works – with livestock right there.

Sheep

Sheep farmers will have the ability to see how handling equipment works in the real world. Ontario Sheep Farmers is hosting a demonstration that will feature Brussel Agri Service equipment including gates, penning, weighing equipment and sorters. Huber Ag will also be participating in the demonstration.

Visit the Ontario Sheep Farmers booth at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. daily for the sheep handling demonstration.

Pasture grazing

Gallagher products will be featured in this year’s Pasture Grazing Demonstration, focusing on increasing pasture productivity with controlled grazing. Topics will include managing cover crops for rotational grazing.

The Pasture Grazing Demonstration will take place at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm daily on North Mall.
